Root & Wire

A pot for this tree

Flowering or fruiting (hawthorn, Carmona), forest group (yose-ue), 40 to 70 cm tall, trunk slim (under 2 cm).

Lengthabout 50 cmabout the width of the group or the rock, which is usually close to the tallest tree's height
Depthabout 2 cmshallow: a little over half the thickest trunk, often just a lip on a slab
Shapeslab or traya wide, shallow tray or a stone slab; the group needs width far more than depth
Finishglazedglazed for flowering trees, in a colour that complements the flower or fruit rather than matching it

Rules of thumb, as bonsai people have passed them on; a good eye beats a tape. Measure the tree's height from the soil to the apex and the trunk just above the surface roots.
